Tips on selling a car

  • Ok so you are ready to sell your car, first things first, you’ll probably want to know what the going rate is for a car like yours. Simple…visit Glass’s guide and they will give you a very good indication of what your car may be worth.
  • So now you know your car’s rough value, irrelevant of whether you are trading it in (part exchanging) for a new car at a dealership or selling it privately there are a few pointers to get your best price.

  •  Just as you would make an effort for a “hot date”, then you should prepare your car as if it were going on one.
  • Clean it and then clean it some more, check your carpets, boot, in the glove-box, de-clutter and make sure that the windows are sparkling. Be careful on over-doing the air freshener, some people are allergic to strong smells, so keep it subtle if you can.
  • There are professional car valeters out there, some who are mobile, who will gladly clean your car for you for a small fee of course, but well worth the effort. They can steam clean car upholstery and even the engine, so it all looks spanking new. That small investment could yield you a much bigger return, so do consider it. It certainly saves the nails!
  • If there are bumps and dents on the bodywork, it would be worth checking out the cost to fix it, as again this will all help you to get to your target price, and it could very well be worth the investment.
  • If the car is over 3 years old, make sure that it has a valid M.O.T certificate, which examines steering, brakes, tyres, exhaust, suspension and fuel systems. If you are selling your car privately, the longer the M.O.T certificate is valid for, the better chance you have to sell it.
  • Keep all your service and repair receipts together, and make sure that there’s a stamp in your service record book for each service you have had. It can make a big difference if the buyer, whether it’s a dealership or an individual, can see that everything has been cared for and you are transparent with the service and repair history.
