Oil

Check the engine oil level at least once a month - don't rely on the oil indicator light to tell you it's low. Keeping the oil at tChecking the oilhe right level is important as it helps to protect and extend the life of movable engine parts. Where possible, check the oil with the car on a level surface when the engine is cold, if you check it after the engine has been turning over, the oil may be deposited higher up on the dip stick and give a false reading.

Remove the dipstick and you'll see a thin film of oil. The owner's manual will tell you where to find the dipstick and, on some cars, it may have a red or orange handle to help you spot it. Wipe off the film with a clean rag and push the dipstick back in fully. Pull it out again and check the oil level by noting where the film of oil reaches to. If it's between the upper and lower oil levels, then there is enough oil in the engine. If it's below the lower level, the oil needs a top-up.

If you need to top up, you'll now have to find the oil cap - it's usually at the top of the engine and is clearly marked 'oil'. But if you're in any doubt, check the manual. Always use the right type of oil for your car - the manual will tell you what you need. Pour oil into the oil cap opening, check the dipstick and repeat until the dipstick mark is between the lower and upper levels.
