What to do in the event of an accident
If you are unfortunately involved in an accident where there is damage to either your car or someone else’s (or both) and particularly when someone is hurt you should follow this advice;
- Call an ambulance if necessary, people are far more important than metal!

- Call the police if there has been damage to any property, (you have 24 hours to do this)
- Give details of your insurance company to the other party involved in the accident
- DO NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY even if you think the accident has been your fault. There may be factors that you were unaware of at the time of the accident that could affect the claim. You also may be in shock and say something you regret.
- Take detailed notes of what happened. Sketch a picture of the scene and write down as much as you can remember, time of day, weather conditions etc. Claims can be prolonged and take time, so the more info you have to hand the better.
- Tell your Insurance Company about the accident even if you don’t intend to make a claim
- If you do intend to make a claim don’t have your vehicle repaired until you have got the go ahead from your Insurance Company. They may want to inspect the car and they may have approved repairers which could be cheaper and provide alternative transport while your car is being fixed.
- If your car is a write off your insurance company will make a one off payment to enable you to buy another ( see also Guaranteed Asset Protection Policy)
- If you do have any other expenses such as hiring a car while yours is being repaired keep the receipts you may be able to claim expenses back from your insurance company.
